Math can be fun, and even competitive. MathCounts is a math competition where regions all over the United States compete to be the best in the country, and last Friday Academy’s Middle Division math club team went to compete. The coach of the team is Debra Reed, who is also one of the math teachers at the school. Roshan Warman (12th grade) is the team’s assistant coach. The competitors for the team were Ryleigh Van-Veghel (8th grade), Addison Pollock (8th grade), Joey Cerise (7th grade), Rohan Vemuri (6th grade), Eugene Ross (6th grade), and Elise Faith (8th grade), sadly though Elise got sick on the day of the competition and was not able to compete, but she was still a part of the team. Eugene said that he enjoyed the competition and would do it again.

“I thought that some of the questions were difficult, and some were easy and good for my skill level. The team was also fun and I loved working with the group,” Eugene said.

Though the team did not bring home any trophies, they did come back to school with smiles on their faces, and stories to tell. Since only four people allowed per team, and the club had 5 people, one person had to be the individual, which meant that their scores don’t count for some of the tests. The individual for Academy was Joey Cerise. He said that he liked being the individual because he was really only competing against himself. There was also less pressure on him because the team’s score wasn’t depending on him.
