Why should we use worm castings for our gardens?

By: Will Peña, Middle Division Green Club

Do you have a garden, or want to have one? Well, first of all, worm castings are one of the best fertilizers in the world. Inside of the castings is organic sources of nitrogen and phosphorus.

The number one reason why you would want to use worm castings is to not put bad chemicals in your gardens. The best worms to produce worm castings are red wigglers. The hummus in the worm castings extracts toxins, harmful fungi, and bacteria from the soil. Worm castings, therefore, have the ability to fight off plant diseases, and they can fix/remove heavy metals in organic waste. This prevents plants from absorbing more chemical compounds than they need. Because worm castings will never harm plants, you can use as much of it as you like. Also, the humic acid in worm castings stimulates plant growth, even in very low concentrations. I hope this teaches you more about worm castings, and why we should use this for our gardens.
